Exam proctoring for Danish upper-secondary schools

Monitor exams without ending up in a case with the Danish DPA.

Invigilo watches students' screens during written exams and flags anything that looks like cheating. Everything outside the exam window is stripped from the student's computer before anything is sent.

Why now

The duty exists. The tool does not.

The requirement

1 February 2026
A new exam order makes the AI ban binding, not advisory.
August 2026
An emergency package against AI cheating urges schools to proctor exams.

Attempts so far

The Digital Exam Guard
The state's own tool was scrapped after criticism.
The leading commercial tool
Criticised twice by the Danish DPA.

Schools must monitor exams, but lack a tool they can safely choose. That's why Invigilo exists.

Exam

From the invigilator opening it to the evidence being deleted.

One proctored exam. Monitoring starts when the invigilator opens it — not before.

Exam day

One continuous window. Monitoring begins when the exam opens and stops when it closes.
Opened by a human
No schedule starts an exam. The invigilator does, and only then does collection begin.
Findings appear as they happen
A flagged student jumps to the top of the proctor's view immediately — not in a report afterwards.
The evidence deletes itself
The recording is deleted automatically once the appeal deadline expires.

Works entirely offline

The client stores everything locally and encrypted. If the school's connection goes down for the whole exam, the student exports an encrypted archive at the end and sends it to the school. The exam is still valid — exam day never waits on infrastructure.

SSO and SRPComing

Long assignments are monitored in windows, not weeks.

SSO and SRP assignments run over days or weeks. The teacher opens a window when a monitored session begins and closes it when it ends.

One week

Three monitored sessions in a week. Nothing is collected on Tuesday or Thursday.
One window at a time
Two sessions cannot be open at once.
Nothing in between
If the student writes at home on Tuesday, nothing is recorded.
The deadline runs from the last one
Retention is counted from the last window, because the appeal deadline runs from the grading of the whole assignment.

Why windows

The Danish DPA's proportionality test rests on an exam being short and bounded. Fourteen days of continuous monitoring is not that.

The windows keep a long assignment proportional. The feature is under development and not part of the first version.

Security

Built on the Danish DPA's 2024 ruling.

The authority approved exam proctoring in April 2024 and criticised one thing: the software collected more than intended. Invigilo strips that away on the student's machine before anything is sent.

Address bar and bookmarks masked
They are blurred out at capture time, not afterwards.
Only the exam window is recorded
Desktop, file explorer and filenames are never captured.
Special exam accommodations
Screenshots are turned off entirely for those students.
Server-controlled start
Nothing is collected until the invigilator opens the exam.
